The C&TA was established in 1989 and with a current membership of around 500, our activities have raised the profile of the Norwich Museum Service collection. More importantly over £50,000 of C&TA funds has enabled the Museum Service to enrich and expand their collections and further develop visitor facilities.
A programme of events throughout the year brings together like minded friends. Talks and workshops are held and visits are made to exhibitions locally and nationally. Extremely popular themed costume events are staged from time to time. Displays will often be enlivened by costumes and textiles from both the C&TA’s handling collection and privately owned collections. Our Vintage Fair has become a regular fixture. Two newsletters each year offer interesting articles, information about exhibitions and listings of both C&TA and Museum events.
We work collaboratively with many heritage and craft organisations to keep alive the skills and traditions of the textile industry today. We also seek to showcase the work of contemporary crafts people whose inspiration comes from our local heritage.
C&TA Mission Statement
The C&TA is an independent charity seeking to promote the unique costume and textile collection of the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service.
The C&TA aims to:
1. promote an understanding of the role of textiles in the past, present and future development of Norwich and Norfolk.
2. publicise the Museum collection currently held at The Carrow House Costume and Textile Study Centre in Norwich.
3. raise funds to enrich and expand the Museum collection through our journals and a varied programme of events. Displays will often be enlivened by costumes and textiles from both the C&TA’s handling collection and privately owned collections.
