35 Years of C&TA Support - Ruth Battersby, senior curator, Norfolk Museums Service (NMS)
Ruth Battersby, Senior Curator of Costume and Textiles highlights some of the ways in which the C&TA has contributed over the years - through the purchase of objects for the collections, support for exhibition displays and gallery redisplays, purchase of conservation equipment and books for the library.
The generosity of our members - through membership, events and donations - help the C&TA to continue to support the world-class costume and textile collections held in the Norwich Castle Study Centre, Shirehall.
Ruth Battersby is a specialist in costume and textiles. She has worked as the Curator of Costume and Textiles for Norfolk Museums Service (NMS) for 17 years, managing and providing access to a collection of over 30,000 objects ranging from late 15th century ecclesiastical vestments to contemporary textile art. The collection is focussed on the social history of dress and textiles with comprehensive holdings from the mid-18th to the mid-20th centuries and is displayed in Norwich Castle Museum and the Museum of Norwich (at the Bridewell).
Ruth has curated several exhibitions including ‘Frayed: Textiles on the Edge’, which was shortlisted for the Museums and Heritage Awards in the category of Best Temporary Exhibition, and ‘Nelson and Norfolk’ which featured the largest object in Norfolk Museums Collections – a 9 x 16 metre French Tricolour captured by Nelson’s squadron in 1800. Her most recent exhibitions are ‘Textile Treasures’, a show of quilts, and co-curator of ‘The Last Voyage of the Gloucester’ in partnership with the University of East Anglia.

FASHION REIMAGINED - FILM showing at The Auditorium The Forum, Norwich
As part of the Norfolk Makers Festival at the Forum, C&TA is showing a feature film documentary by Becky Hutner.
100 min | UK, USA | 2022
Fashion designer Amy Powney of cult label Mother of Pearl is a rising star in the London fashion scene. Raised off-the-grid in rural England by activist parents, Amy has always felt uneasy about the devastating environmental impact of her industry. When she won the coveted Vogue award for the Best Young Designer of the Year, which comes with a big cash prize, Amy decided to use the money to create a sustainable collection from field to finished garment, and transform her entire business. Over the following three years, her own personal revolution has become the precursor of a much bigger, societal change. A must-see for anyone interested in the future of fashion.
This will be followed by a discussion of the issues raised and asking what we can do to make fashion more environmentally friendly and sustainable. There will be displays from Norwich University students and Re-Do Norfolk.
